And we're back!
After taking a year off to do some soul searching... the Carnival of Love Foundation is back with exciting new plans, and a renewed mission.
During our time away from the public-eye (as we were still hard at work behind the scenes), we identified a critical need in our community: that families affected by special needs and autism, were experiencing extreme gaps in service, from the lack of educational tools and resources, to no programs or services available in their native languages, to a general lack of community acceptance, integration and support.
We partnered with a team of volunteers - talented psychologists, medicaid specialists, and speech pathologists - and the more we explored, the more and more families emerged that were secretly dealing with these issues.
We then started looking at the data -- of all the developmental disabilities, autism is growing at an alarmingly exponential rate; then we read about Stephanie Seneff, PhD, a lead researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who recently warned that "at today's rate, half of all US children will be autistic by 2025!" :-/
We took that staggering information back to the drawing board, and re-evaluated why we were here, what living legacy we wanted to create, and what solutions we could put forth to empower these children and families... It then became quite clear, that we had to GIVE BACK in a bigger way, to the same communities that supported us over the past 8 years, so we narrowed our focus...
Our new Mission is to enhance the mind, body and spirit of children and families affected by autism and special needs, through access to alternative therapies, culturally-minded programs and services, educational resources, and unique healing experiences.
Our new Vision includes, but is not limited to, hosting educational workshops, community support programs for parents and siblings, and family recreational activities. Our long term goal is to open a Healing Arts Center in the LIC/Astoria area, to better facilitate all the community's needs in one place; details on this project will be announced later this year.
That being said, we are kicking off Autism Awareness Month by introducing a series of Parent Support Meetings and Educational Workshops for parents and caregivers of children with special needs; please click on the links above for more information.
